Truckee Voters to Consider $25 Million Library Bond in November Election

What is Measure G, and how could it impact Truckee’s future library and community services?
This November, Truckee voters will decide whether to approve Measure G, a proposal that would fund up to $25 million in bonds to build a new public library. If passed by a two-thirds majority, the measure would replace Truckee’s aging library with a larger, modern facility designed to meet the community’s needs for decades to come.

Why the Library Bond Is on the Ballot

The Truckee Library, located on Levon Avenue, has served residents for nearly 50 years. Over time, however, space and infrastructure limitations have become more apparent. In 2018, a local nonprofit, Friends of the Truckee Library, began exploring options for a new facility better equipped for today’s programs and technology.

Measure G now gives voters the opportunity to help fund that vision through a community bond. If approved, the measure would provide up to $25 million in financing toward construction of a new, 21st-century library.

What the New Library Would Offer

The proposed library is more than just a larger space for books. Plans outline a multifunctional community center designed to serve Truckee’s diverse needs, including:

  • Emergency preparedness: The facility would double as a resource center during regional emergencies such as wildfires or extended power outages.

  • Expanded programming: More room for children’s story time, senior activities, workshops, and local events.

  • Modern technology: Upgraded digital infrastructure for public computers, internet access, and collaborative learning spaces.

  • Accessibility improvements: A design that accommodates people of all abilities.

  • New location: Proposed for Truckee River Regional Park, positioning the library alongside other community amenities.

How Measure G Would Be Funded

If voters approve Measure G, the funding would come through a Community Facilities District (CFD No. 1) established for the Truckee Library project. Property owners within the district would pay a special tax of 3 cents per square foot of building area:

  • Residential and commercial properties would be taxed based on building size.

  • Vacant parcels would be assessed about $29 per year.

  • The tax would continue for up to 30 years, with proceeds used solely to repay the library bonds.

Only voters who live within the CFD No. 1 boundary will be eligible to participate in the special election.

Community Support and Endorsements

The proposal has received broad local attention. More than 80 individuals and 100 organizations and businesses have endorsed Measure G, including the Truckee Town Council, which voted unanimously to support it.

Supporters describe the bond as an investment in Truckee’s future, highlighting both the educational and emergency-response benefits of the new facility.

Opponents have raised questions about long-term costs and the need for new taxes, particularly for residents who may not frequently use library services. Because the measure requires a two-thirds supermajority, even small groups of “no” votes could influence the outcome.

When and How to Vote

The special election will take place on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Ballots will be mailed to eligible voters in early October and must be returned by Election Day to be counted.

Voters in both Nevada County and Placer County portions of Truckee will have Measure G on their ballots.

Looking Ahead

Measure G represents a pivotal decision for the Truckee community — one that could shape how residents access learning, gather, and stay connected for years to come.

Regardless of the outcome, the discussion reflects Truckee’s continued focus on fostering spaces that bring people together and strengthen local resilience.
